What is the Columbus Festival?
Christopher Columbus lived on Porto Santo before his first voyage to the Americas — he married Filipa Moniz, daughter of the island's governor, and spent several years here in the 1470s and 80s. The Columbus Festival (Festival Colombo) celebrates this connection with a weekend of medieval street markets, costume parades, historical re-enactments, and replica caravels in the harbour.
The island dresses up entirely. Locals wear 15th-century costume, the streets of Vila Baleira fill with period craft stalls, and the whole event has a warm, community atmosphere far removed from mainstream tourist events.

The Beach: The Real Reason to Stay Longer
Porto Santo has 9 kilometres of uninterrupted golden sand — therapeutic, mineral-rich sand that locals claim has healing properties. It's a completely different landscape from volcanic Madeira: flat, sunny, and warm. The sea temperature is a few degrees warmer too. If you're visiting during the festival weekend, add an extra night and spend a full day on the beach. You won't regret it.
Getting There From Madeira
The ferry from Funchal to Porto Santo takes around 2.5 hours and runs daily in summer. The flight is just 15 minutes. Both are bookable in advance and reasonably priced. A day trip is possible but an overnight stay lets you experience both the festival evening programme and a full beach day.
Local tip: The Columbus Festival weekend is Porto Santo's busiest of the year. If you want to stay on the island, book accommodation at least 2–3 months ahead.
Can I do the Columbus Festival as a day trip from Madeira?
Yes — take the morning ferry, enjoy the festival, and return on the evening service. But staying overnight is strongly recommended to catch the evening events and beach time.
