Madeira Atlantic Festival 2026: Fireworks, Music & Summer Nights in Funchal

Every Saturday in June, Funchal bay lights up with world-class fireworks — and the best view is from the water

June is one of the best months to visit Madeira, and the Atlantic Festival is the reason. Four consecutive Saturday nights of international fireworks displays over the bay, plus live concerts and open-air festivities. Here's how to make the most of it.

What is the Atlantic Festival?

The Festival do Atlântico is an international fireworks competition held across four Saturday evenings in June. Pyrotechnics teams from different countries each take one Saturday to put on a synchronised display set to music over Funchal bay. The shows last around 20–25 minutes each and are genuinely world-class.

Beyond the fireworks, the festival includes outdoor concerts, food markets along the seafront, and a generally festive atmosphere that makes June evenings in Funchal feel magical.

The Best Way to Watch: From the Water

Watching from the seafront promenade is free and gives a great view — but a sunset boat tour that stays out on the water for the fireworks is one of the defining Madeira experiences. You watch the rockets launch from the hillsides above the city and see their reflections in the sea below you. It's extraordinary. Book well in advance — these spots fill up fast.

Where to Watch From Land

  • Seafront promenade (Lido to Marina) — the most popular free viewing area, gets crowded
  • Marina Funchal — great central position, restaurants nearby
  • Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint — elevated view over the whole bay, less crowded
  • Hotel terraces — if your hotel has a sea view terrace, it may be the best seat in the house

What Else to Do in June

June is one of Madeira's finest months. Days are long, temperatures are warm but not overwhelming (22–25°C), and the levada trails are at their best. A full week in Madeira in June — combining morning hikes, afternoon beaches, and Saturday night fireworks — is close to a perfect holiday.

Local tip: The concerts before the fireworks start mid-evening along the seafront. Arrive by 8pm to get a good spot, grab food from the stalls, and settle in before the show.

How many fireworks displays are there?

Four — one each Saturday in June. Each features a different international team, so attending multiple Saturdays gives you four different shows.

Are the fireworks visible from outside Funchal?

Yes — from many hillside viewpoints across the south of the island you can see the displays. But for the full experience with music and atmosphere, being in or near Funchal is worth it.

Can I book a boat tour for the fireworks?

Yes — we offer sunset boat tours that stay on the water for the fireworks. Spaces are limited and book up weeks in advance.
