PR 1 – Vereda do Pico do Areeiro até Pedra Rija is a spectacular mountain hiking route starting at Pico do Areeiro and following the dramatic ridges of Madeira’s central mountain range towards Pedra Rija. The trail offers breathtaking views of steep peaks, deep valleys and rugged volcanic landscapes, with the scenery changing as you move through the high mountains.

This section of PR 1 is an excellent choice for hikers who want to experience Madeira’s famous mountain scenery without necessarily completing the full route to Pico Ruivo. The combination of exposed ridges, dramatic viewpoints and high-altitude landscapes makes it a memorable part of the PR 1 hiking experience.
