PR 27 – Glaciar de Planalto is a unique Madeira hiking trail across the high plateau of Paul da Serra, offering a fascinating look at the island’s ancient glacial landscape. Starting at Bica da Cana, the route passes through a former glacial valley and around Fonte do Juncal, with impressive views across the open plateau and surrounding mountains.
The trail is especially interesting for hikers who enjoy geology, nature and Madeira’s unusual landscapes. Along the way, you can see evidence of the glaciers that shaped Paul da Serra around 25,000 years ago, including glacial deposits and the Fajã Redondo glacial cirque. PR 27 offers a very different hiking experience from Madeira’s forest and levada trails.
